As to the use of the pleasure garden, thanks to the lawnmower it was possible to provide a level, close-textured lawn suitable for summer games such as croquet and lawn bowls. Archery might also be attempted where space allowed. Tennis, of course, eventually became the favourite summer game for social events, but not until the end of the century, into the Edwardian era. The Floral World suggested another use for the lawn in winter if it were based on clay soil and had a good supply of water:
